With our FabLab/STEAM elective we watched the UN Introductory video The World's Largest Lesson. The students (G6-8) were asked to design a jigsaw puzzle for younger students, depicting a message from the video.

An interesting reflection is that although all of the students had heard of the words "Sustainable Development", they had a hard time expressing in their own words what this actually meant.

Sustainable Development in Class - Textile Units 6-8

Using Silhouette Studio, Heat Vinyl Transfer and a Heat Press

Grade 6

Rather than go out and buy new items, we gave our boring old clothes and bags a new lease of life.

Having found or created our favorite logos, we used Heat Vinyl Transfer to liven up our lives.

Grade 7

Using plastic bags is devastating for our environment, so grade 7 made their own tote bags from scratch. Using sewing machines, and good old fashioned needles and thread, the 7th graders took offshoots of material and created their own bags. To personalise their bags, the students decorated them using the Heat Vinyl transfers, with a minimum of 2 colors.

Grade 8

The 8th graders went one step further. They had to design and cut out their own computer bag. In their design, they had to take into consideration protection for the MacBooks as well as handles for ease of transport. They are decorating them using the Heat Vinyl transfers, using a minimum of 3 colors.
