Design Development
Guidelines for the Thesis Book
Chapter Overview
During the Design Development phase, students will integrate findings and discoveries from Schematic Design with new requirements presented in this design phase. The chapter will organize the information developed during the Schematic Design phase of Thesis.
Design Development (Chapter content)
Design Development Narrative
The narative is a written summary of the discoveries from schematic design. While some of this narrative will repeat from the SD Narrative, it is expected that student focus on new developments during the DD project phase. The summary can include:
Explanation of how the design decisions support the design goals and objectives of the thesis.
Exploration of how the design decisions respond to the programatic needs and aesthetic concepts of the thesis.
Architectural Drawings
While the quantity of drawings will vary based on the scope and focus of each thesis, it is understood that all Thesis projects will include the following drawing types. Adjustments to this list can be made with the approval of the Thesis Chair.
Final Presentation Floor Plan(s) should address and include the following:
Functional programmatic requirements
Room names (numbers and square footage hidden)
Project code requirements
Symbolic references to other drawings (e.g. elevation, section, perspective)
Architectural graphic scale or overall/significant dimensions
Funiture & Finish Plan(s)
Annotated Plan(s) - The annotated floor plan shows the application of design recommendations from literature and individual inquiry if applicable. This plan is in addition to the Floor Plan listed above.
Enlarged Plan(s) for significant spaces in the project.
Reflected Ceiling Plan(s) - The Presentation RCP will include:
Room names,
Project lighting,
significant ceiling features,
ceiling heights, and
special equipment
Note: Life safety (exit signage, sprinklers, etc.) and HVAC information is not required for the RCP.
Interior Elevations
Include furniture and finishes
Building Section(s)
Details
Materials & Finishes
Materials and finishes used in the project should be included in the chapter. Students will determine the best method to cross-reference the materials usage in architectural drawings.
Three-Dimensional Deliverables
Perspectives of significant programmatic spaces
Isometric or Axonometric of significant programmatic spaces
Physical Model(s) - Photographs
Design Development Presentation (Final Defense)
Please note: The DD presentation/final defense will include additional information from the chapter requirements listed above. Students should discuss these requirements with their Thesis Committee Chair. Final Defense Guidelines are also available here.
Use of Graphics in the Thesis
Graphics from the thesis may be integrated throughout the chapter or placed at the end of each chapter.
Graphics may include charts, graphs, tables, photographs, sketches, matrices, etc. that support and enhance the findings and discussion;
Graphics MUST be mentioned or described in the text. Explain what is shown, what reader is to see, and how it relates to analysis;
Design Project drawings go into the document after the Bibliography and Appendices.
Refer to The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or Turabian’s A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses or Dissertations for graphic naming conventions.
