Composting & Worm Farms

Composting prevents food waste from being taken to landfill and provides nutrients for our gardens. ABC Gardening Australia's Costa Georgiadis shows how to set up your own compost system.

Residents of Port Phillip without the space to compost can drop their food waste in Mary & Basil Organic Community Garden's compost bins. Chop up your vegies into small pieces so that they will break down quickly. Only organic matter, but no meat and fish please.

Worm farms are another great way to divert food waste from landfill. They take up little room and are easy to set up –– see the City of Port Phillip's instructions below and also Millie Ross' terrific segment on different ways to build a worm farm.
