Phonics

We use the Smart Kids - the Code.  In Nursery children learn about sounds and have daily activities to help them 'tune in sound' in preparation for learning individual letter sounds (phonemes) and the symbol for the sound (graphemes)  Some children may start to learn these individual sounds towards the end of their time in Nursery but all children start to learn phonics phase 2 as soon as they arrive in Reception.

Children grouped by ability for a daily 25-minute phonics session, using a range of resources and supplementary ICT resources. Children have access to a wide range of reading material. Children are provided with reading books which match the sounds that they have learnt and move on to ability banded books when they are ready.
