Above I have added photos of my finished koru art and pendent. All these designs show something meaningful towards me, both the korus arts were done on an A4 black piece of card. First, we made a draft and then transferred it onto a good piece of paper and colored it in with pastel. I have chosen bright colors for my designs to help make them stand out and bold. My pendant is in the shape of a heart with a small koru in the middle. I have added a small description explaining why I did that design and what it means to me.
The koru is one of the most important symbols of the Maori tradition, it holds so much meaning and history as it represents new life, spiritual growth, and progress. The shape of the koru is either a spiral, loop, or coil. Because of its circular shape, it conveys the idea of perpetual movement, meaning the design showcases how life both changes and stays the same.
Once when the Māori people believed that in plethora, gods and goddesses gave lots of meaning to the environment’s elements. The korus purpose is explained a lot throughout āthe background information of the Maori, it can be shown through traditions, art, and culture. While creating Maori art they tend to use many colors, designs, and even patterns. The history behind the koru is extremely important to Maori tradition and culture as it has been around for thousands of years.
There are multiple different symbols representing the koru, for example, life, growth, movement, and harmony. Lots of these meanings are also used in tā moko, a well-known Maori tattoo. But even some korus can be painted individually or drawn with other designs, the main colors the koru includes are red, white, and black. But the modern use of the koru is mostly shown in jewelry and art.
My artwork shows two main korus in the middle of my art, this represents new life. Some of my designs and lines mostly mean new beginnings, the colors I have chosen were used to make my korus stand out when someone first looks at my art. Each little line and design you see on my artwork all mean and show something.
This video is my Pepha explaining all about me. The photo in the video is the same as the one above where my koru art it. In the video I talk about my family such as my brothers, parents, and where my ancestors come from. I also talk about my mountain, river, and the place I am from which is Christchurch New Zealand. A Pepeha is a way of introducing somebody, it is written or spoken in the Maori context and is a formal way of telling people where you belong and where you are from. I feel that my Pepeha is a special way of making myself known to my peers. People normally create a Pepeha as a way of connecting to other people and sharing things about them that they cherish or connect to somehow.
Here I have added videos explaining more about the Maori culture and another showcasing something they call Kapa Haka which is a large part of their culture. They will normally perform a haka, poi, and singing. They can also wear a necklace with greenstone hanging in the middle, also known as pounamu, which is what our inspiration was for our pendant. The koru is used as a symbol of creativity, it is in the shape of an unfurling silver fern which can also represent our country. The Koru can hold multiple meanings but its circular shape can display perpetual movement.
