Outside Hitter
The outside hitter is the dominance of the team. She takes care of business. She is reliable and consistent. She gets more sets than anyone on the court. Outside hitters should:
ALWAYS be available to attack. She gets in-system sets and out of system sets so she should always expect to be set and be in good position to prepare for an attack.
Be a power hitter. She can cram the ball to create kills and keep the other team out of system.
Be a reliable hitter. She should be able to effectively attack the ball and keep it in play without errors. She should have the lowest hitting error percentage on the team.
Be confident. When the team is struggling to get a kill, she looks at her setter and tells her to “give me the ball”.
Pass and defend first. We don’t get to hit if the ball hits our court. She takes responsibility for defense before offense.
Be a great serve receiver. She is often in serve receive patterns and must be able to pass the ball effectively.
Be able to hit from both pins. Because she is always in serve receive, she should be able to hit on the left and right side of the court.
Hit all angles of the court. She should be able to hit sharp cross, deep cross, and line.
Be an aggressive attacker. She should be able to send smart tips and roll shots when needed, but prefers to hit the ball majority of the time.
Have the ability to tool the block.
Be a strong blocker. She should set a solid, lined up block that the middle blocker can close as well.
Work to transition fast and deep every time the ball enters our court.
Track the opponent’s setter. She is responsible for blocking a front row setter’s attack so she should know if she is front row or back row.
Track the opponent’s hitters. She should always know where their right side and middle hitters are.
See the block. She should always be behind the ball so she can see the blockers with her peripheral vision and be able to hit around or between them.
Assess her blockers. She should find the weakest, smallest, or slowest blocker and be able to hit in their direction.
The outside hitter is the most dependable player on the court. We can set her the ball more than anyone on the court and we know she will not only keep it in play, but execute an aggressive attack. She is always ready to attack the ball.
The outside hitter is a mental and emotional rock. She doesn’t get frazzled by errors and never panics. She is confident and competitive with a dominating attitude.
The outside hitter is always working to improve agility, power, and control. She dominates on the court and in the weight room. Her competitiveness makes her and her teammates stronger.
From the coach:
We are looking for an outside hitter who strives to be the strongest player on and off the court. She competes at the highest level in everything she does. She excels in power and consistency and is a rock on the court. She sees every challenge as an opportunity to compete and dominate. Her presence on the court is confident to her team and intimidating to the opponent.
