Marin County has long supported the immigrant community by providing a system of support through government, schools, and nonprofits. The Immigrant Rights & Justice Workgroup (IR&J) is a collaborative of agencies committed to strengthening the local system of support to ensure all immigrants in Marin County feel a sense of belonging and can thrive. Using a "collective impact" approach, we aim to coordinate among organizations to provide a cohesive system of support that is accessible, culturally responsive, and comprehensive for Marin's immigrant community. Additionally, we aim to incorporate eco-friendly solutions to create meaningful and sustainable change.
The IR&J provides backbone support to the collaborative leadership efforts below. They are composed of partner agencies and community members working to address immediate concerns and long-term challenges. Leaders attend quarterly IR&J meetings to share updates and coordinate strategies. While the focus of this work is to strengthen the system of support for immigrants, we believe this will result in benefits to all residents in Marin seeking to access the social safety net.
Weekly updates on federal, state, and local policy and practice; community voices to highlight urgent needs of the immigrant community; timely calls to action; resources and trainings; and asks and offers for collaboration.
By strengthening connections among providers, improving coordination of services, and expanding accessibility the IR&J partners will evolve the current ecosystem of providers into a single system of support that is resilient in the face of policy and funding shifts.
There is no standard definition for an effective "system of support" for immigrant communities. The partners agreed to a “roughly right” definition to create common language and focus our work. Cultural and age diversity means immigrants can face a variety of barriers to accessing support. Immigrants also adapt to new communities in stages, each bringing new challenges and barriers. As we are all in a constant process of "becoming," we recognize that attaining the factors contributing to belonging and thriving is not a linear process. Additionally, the immigrant community has a system of support that extends well beyond what nonprofits, schools, and government agencies provide. Families, neighbors, and others in the community are frontline support providers. The IR&J's focus is on strengthening all levels of the system of support for our immigrant community in ways that will also improve its effectiveness for all who need it.
