Coral reefs are diversity of animals called polyps. Polyps are invertabes that range in many different sizes. They can grow with each other as colonies while working as one. The grow for many years which combined with other corals to create coral reefs.
Coral reefs provide a line of protection to coastlines of cities from storms. They also help provide food and jobs for people.
Many coral reefs are at threat because of unhealthy finishing practices and pollution caused by human population. stressed coral can cause coral bleaching and sometimes death.
Coral reefs thrive in shallow ocean water due to a relationship they have with photosynthetic algae that live in their tissues that allows them to get their food through the process of photosynthesis. A relative off shallow water coral are deep water coral, due to lack of sunlight and photosynthetic algae to get their food from they rely on plankton and other organic matter.
Coral reefs such as the Great Barrier reef can contain over 6,000 different species including fish, coral, turtles, and others. About 25% of fish depend on healthy coral reefs to live and breed as weel as feed their young.
