Principal's Message

It has been wonderful walking around the school this week and seeing all the fantastic learning opportunities. We have had an author do a virtual visit in Years 3 and 4 and the Early Years have visited the church. We have also been upping our sporting efforts this week with rounders tournaments in Lower Key Stage 2 and Upper Key Stage 2 where we finished first and second respectively! Please visit our sports page for more information. The enrichment keeps coming next week with cricket competitions, WWII workshops and Year 1 careers dress up day! I am proud of the varied and exciting learning opportunities we have at Marden and it is an important aspect of what makes our Personal Development offer here Outstanding. Well done must go to our fantastic Year 2 students who have been completing their SATS this week; I have been impressed by their calm, focused and happy demeanour.

Prime Energy & Prime Hydration Drinks

Recently we've had a few cases of children bringing bottles of ‘Prime Hydration’ and 'Prime Energy' to school with their packed lunches.

Although there are no health risks to children associated with drinking ‘Prime Hydration’ the drink does contain a high level of electrolytes. Electrolytes aren't recommended for children unless they are unwell or at risk of dehydration.

Prime Energy contains 200mg of caffeine per can, enough to cause anxiety, disturb sleep patterns and lead to caffeine dependence. There is no safe limit for caffeine for primary school-age children and the recommended upper limit even for teenagers is only 100mg. The Prime website states that the drink should not be consumed by under 18s. If your child is tired enough to need such a daily caffeine shot, you should consult your GP about the possibility of an underlying health problem.

As a result the school has taken the decision to ban all forms of the Prime drink. Children should therefore not bring it to school as part of their packed lunch. We will remove any cans or bottles of Prime we find and offer the children water instead.

For packed lunches, children are allowed to bring squash, fruit juice, milk, milkshakes, smoothies or flavoured water. We still encourage children to bring additional water in a bottle to drink in class during the day.

National Online Safety

A free online safety guide on looking after your wellbeing online.

The online world and digital technology has become such a significant part of our lives – and integral to so many aspects of our daily routine – that we shouldn’t be surprised at the degree of influence it can wield over what we think and how we feel. Many experiences that young people have on the internet are hugely positive and uplifting … but sadly, that’s not always the case.

Negative incidents online – such as disagreements with other users, stumbling across upsetting content or feeling left out by friends – can be intensely damaging to a child’s emotional state. Our #WakeUpWednesday poster has some useful tips for young people and trusted adults on how even small, simple actions can help to protect our wellbeing when we’re on the internet.
