Outdoor School

What is Outdoor School?

Outdoor School offers a well-established, hands-on approach to science education, boasting over 60 years of tradition in Oregon.

Since its inception in 1957, Outdoor School (ODS) has provided fifth and sixth-grade students with the opportunity to transition from traditional classrooms to immersive outdoor learning environments. Held in residential camps, ODS programs offer students the chance to stay onsite for up to five nights, delving into the intricacies of nature.

During their time at Outdoor School, students explore topics ranging from soil and water to local flora and fauna, as well as the unique natural sciences pertinent to their community and economy.

For many participants, Outdoor School marks their inaugural experiences hiking through forests, wading in streams, or discovering marine life along sandy shores. For others, it serves as a catalyst for newfound understandings and perspectives about the natural world. These transformative encounters not only expand young minds but also have the potential to shape lives.
