Third Graders study landscapes, starting with just view from their window and ending up with whole worlds mapped but oddly exploring our subjects from the outside in. We begin with a view from their windows, local, recognizable, simple landscapes, then move on to pop up images of our bedrooms and all the hints they give about our personalities and hobbies, finally we make a map of a world that holds all the feelings and emotion inside of us. Third grade is a great time to get student to express their personalities, find out what they have in common with their peers, find out what makes them special, and find community in those similarities and differences.
