In Grade 5, instructional time will focus on three critical areas:
(1) developing fluency with addition and subtraction of fractions, and developing understanding of the multiplication of fractions and of division of fractions in limited cases (unit fractions divided by whole numbers and whole numbers divided by unit fractions)
(2) extending division to 2-digit divisors, integrating decimal fractions into the place value system and developing understanding of operations with decimals to hundredths, and developing fluency with whole number and decimal operations
(3) developing understanding of volume.
Our primary curriculum is the Bridges 3rd Edition math curriculum. We will also use ideas from Peter Liljedahl's Building Thinking Classrooms framework for engaged learning, such as working in small groups at whiteboards and having students self-select some of their independent practice work from a set of easy, medium, and hard problems.
Students can access additional help by seeing me at X Block or with independent learning through Khan Academy.
Khan Academy: Log in through Clever
We will begin the year by thinking about ourselves as learners of mathematics and understanding how we will work and think in our classroom. Once these norms and procedures are established, our first unit of instruction will include expressions, equations, and volume (building in a lot of review of multiplication facts!)
Homework
1) Until your child has achieved fluency (fast, accurate recall) of all multiplication and division facts through 12x12, they should practice every day for 5-10 minutes. I use Mathigon Multiplication By Heart to support students' fact fluency.
2)Your child will receive weekly homework, typically due Friday. Homework will be recorded in the planner on Monday. After multiplication facts, your child should spend about 15 minutes on the practice assignments M-Th. If your child is having trouble, please ask them to sign up to discuss the homework with me at X Block.
