Out of School Learning

  • Multiple Pathways, Anytime-Anywhere Learning, and Equitable Access. Students will have an array of pathways, including community-based, extended, credit-bearing, out-of-school learning opportunities, to pursue passions and satisfy graduation requirements. Every student, in consultation with their advisor, will be required to engage in learning outside the classroom walls that will include the following:
    • College partnerships: dual enrollment courses and early college opportunities
    • Business partnerships: shadow days, informational interviews, internships, and apprenticeships
    • Community and city partnerships: citizenship development, service learning, and volunteering
    • Independent study: extended field research through an application and review process

These pathways will be permeable and fluid, in that many students may find that the first pathway chosen ends up not being fulfilling to them or that they have multiple interests; students will have the opportunity to change pathways in concert with their advisor.

  • Flexible Schedule. Several out-of-school learning opportunities that students will select will occur outside the normal school day and hours, thus not fitting neatly into the traditional high school schedule of multiple periods of shorter duration. Thus, flexible schedules will be explored and ultimately adopted to accommodate out-of-school learning, for example block schedules in which courses take place 2-3 times per week for longer time periods, or staggered schedules for faculty.
