Celebrating Student Success
Culture Makers Lab
Year 8 students attended the Culture Makers Lab facilitated by the Immigration Museum on Monday the 19th of June. Artist Olana Janfa took students through the artistic journey and process, followed by an exhibition tour. Students had a go at creating their own work in response to this experience.
BioScience Education Centre
On Tuesday the 4th of April 2023, Year 8 Enrichment students attended the Sports Technology and Data Analysis program facilitated by the Victorian BioScience Education Centre. This is a specialised extension program included in the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series for high ability students.
Civics and Citizenship Excursion
On Thursday the 27th of October, 9C Enrichment student, Ashna Handa attended the Civics and Citizenship convention at the Hotel Windsor. She attended three seminars from a variety of university professors who discussed if voting should be compulsory. Working collaborately with students from other schools, she developed arguments and showcased evidence supporting her contention. She presented her team's case with a persuasive tone and compelling arguments to students across all Australian states and territories involved in the convention.
Ashna, we are so proud of your ability to use your leadership skills in a responsive and meaningful way; we look forward to seeing what else you will achieve with these skills!
Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series: Ocean Sustainability
In Term 4, our Year 7 Enrichment class learnt about how to code animations through the Scratch platform. Students created their own drawing, coded the characters to move and embed sound into their work. Below are some examples of students creations!
Work and summary by Eric Sherasiya
Today we learned about the Port Phillip Bay ecosystem and food chain. We learned that spider crabs are the prey of smooth stingrays. Also we coded that into a game to replicate what happens in the sea.
Work and summary by Hari Sannasi Perumal Easwaran
Today we learnt about Port Phillip Bay's ecosystem and how stingrays feast on crabs in their shedding season, so to represent this event, as a class, we created a Scratch game in which stingrays devour the crabs that are multiplying at a very fast rate.
Year 8 and 9 Enrichment Testing
On Thursday the 15th of September, 70 Year 7 and 8 students sat Enrichment testing for a place in the Year 8 or 9 program for 2023. Well done to all students who participated and we look forward to sharing your results with you next term. From there, the Enrichment panel reviews applications and we will communicate with you no later than November about the outcome.
Fractured Fairy Tales Incursion
A select group of Year 7 students completed the 'Fractured fairy tales' writing event on Wednesday the 14th of September with Swinburne University as part of the Victorian Challenge and Enrichment Series program. Students created their own fairy tale and developed a digital storyboard on Metaverse.
Here is a review from Khanak Kainth: We did an activity and we used a metaverse website and we created a story on it. It was very fun and enjoyable to do something different in this session.
Here is a summary of Niveditha Satheshbabu's fairy tale: The story has been merged with the story of 'Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs' to make it more engaging. There have been new characters from other stories that have been added to this version. Readers can choose the way the story goes and are the ones who decide Little Red Riding Hood's fate. They might even end up meeting Snow White and her little friends along the way or pick a fight with the Big, Bad Wolf! The decision is theirs.
Take a look at their creations below!

2023 Year 7 Enrichment Testing
On Saturday the 3rd of September we had over 70 students complete Enrichment testing at our College. It was lovely meeting you all and we wish you success with your application!
Australian Maths Competition
On the Thursday the 4th of August Year 7, 8 and 9 Enrichment students participated in the online Australian Maths competition. Here are some testimonials from students:
The test was exhilarating and every moment was a wild rush in which we were presented with enriched questions. This math's competition truly posed a challenge and is a great way to compete among your peers - Oviya Kokulakannan
The test had unexpected questions which both challenged and encouraged me to solve them. I enjoyed the variety of topics presented in the competition as it is a good opportunity to test your math skills- Ashnadhi Jaiprakash
The competition was very wide ranged as it had many questions which were challenging and enhancing. I think the AMC focuses on number theory, problem solving and geometry. The questions towards the end become harder to challenge the best students. I had a really great experience this year and I will be looking forward to compete in other competitions in the future- Alisha Mukhi
Year 8 Writing Workshop Incursion
We all have stories to share, but writing it down can be a challenging task!
The Year 8 Enrichment Students took part in a Writing Workshop ran by the ABC. The students were tasked with brainstorming story ideas based on their own passions, interests and challenges they have overcome.
The competition is open to all students in Metro Victoria and entries close June 25th 2022.
We are so grateful to Uma from the ABC who came out and visited our school!
The Victorian High-Ability Program
A new program has been employed by the Victorian Government Department of Education and Training (DET), where Virtual School Victoria develop and deliver the Victorian High-Ability Program. This consists of intensive ten-week online courses in Mathematics and English for students in Years 5-8. Students are chosen from each school by the DET, with new students chosen each term.

VHAP Term 1 2022
Congratulations to Chandana and Yna who completed VHAP during Term 1 this year!
"English VHAP is a good experience for those who are interested in broadening their knowledge to strengthen their work in English. We explored aspects of utopias and dystopias, types of government and how they are commented on in texts, symbolism and much more. What you learn becomes a great tool for your English classes. On the plus side, it gives you some credentials useful in the future." - Yna, completed VHAP English Term 1 2022.
VHAP Masterclass Terms 2-4
Our delayed Victorian High Abilities Program masterclass finally went ahead on Thursday the 2nd of December, filled with Mathematics and English-focused activities to complete as a group. Students reflected on their learning over the term's curriculum they participated in, and shared the highs and lows of the program. Students wished to interact more with their peers who completed the program, and were happy that a masterclass was able to go ahead in Term 4 despite the challenges of online learning for most of 2021.
Thank you to the students who participated and made the program a success!

Culture Makers Lab
A select number of interested writers from year 9 and 10 were given the opportunity to attend a Writing Workshop hosted by Gurmeet Kaur from the Immigration Museum with guest speakers Anthea Yang and Munira Tabassum Ahmed. Students were introduced to the writing process through experiences, forms of poetry, key ideas when writing, and practiced responding to prompts.
“The writer's stories were original, raw and brought a new point of view to the words of identity, inspiring everyone to be an author, instead of limiting the space of authors to those who we know but many more.”
Frankee-Lee George
“My previous English teachers always said that writing is about depth and meaning that connects to the world. I've always believed that such depth and literature can be found in the works of famous dead authors like Shakespeare. Attending this webinar personally illuminated how writing can be used as an outlet of expression. It truly does. As an activity, we were told to write without stopping. By simply writing for 10 minutes with a ghost line, I felt as if I was channelling a creative and hidden alter ego within myself. And for that, I am grateful to the Immigration Museum, Culture Makers Lab, and guest speakers Anthea Yang and Munira Tabassum Ahmed for their insights and experiences.”
Swetha Nandakumar
For anyone interested in responding to one of the writing prompts, see below:
Key Ideas
Ghost line – a line of writing taken from someone else that inspires your writing but is not included in the final version of your work
Free writing – writing all your thoughts without stopping for a set period of time and without worrying about spelling, punctuation or grammar
Writing Prompt (10min)
"If I don’t define myself for myself, I would be crunched into other people’s fantasies for me and eaten alive." - Audre Lorde
1. List words that you associate with define, crunched, eaten alive, myself for myself
2. Free-write starting with the ghost line 'If I don't define myself for myself...'
Challenge – Incorporate the bold words as you write

Kangaroo sans Frontières
On the 18 of March 2021, select high-ability 7-10 maths students attended the Kangourou Sans Frontières Maths compétition. All papers in the maths test had 30 questions and went for 75 minutes. The first 10 questions were current student year level, then they gradually got harder and more difficult to answer within the given time. It was an honour to participate in the competition and most of us are looking forward to the second test somewhere in the middle of August. Overall it was an interesting experience that tested student abilities.

NGV’s Creative Writing Challenge with Kalinda Ashton: Dystopian Worlds
Today’s society has many issues, including but not limited to global warming, gender inequality, and, of course, the COVID-19 pandemic. NGV’s Creative Writing Challenge with Kalinda Ashton: Dystopian Worlds inspired both myself and others to extend our thinking on these issues in a creative manner, using artwork from the NGV collection as inspiration. Key ideas that I’ve taken away from the challenge include how to construct a premise for a short story, crafting an opening line, and imagining a setting. The workshop left me with ways to extend my writing in the future, and was incredibly engaging.

ARC Creative Writing Challenge
Creativity can sprout anywhere, and the ARC Creative Writing Challenge really helped me understand that. The workshop, which was held on the 21st of September, focused on finding inspiration for our stories in some simple yet beautiful pieces of art. The workshop helped me understand how to cultivate ideas and transform them into detailed stories. The workshop also highlighted the importance of well developed characters and helped us shape our protagonist through a series of questions. These questions focused on what our character wants, branching out to their traits. The questions also helped us to make the obstacles and stakes of our story clear. This led me to delving deeper into the much needed planning and thought process for a good story, equipping me with helpful tips and tricks to transform ideas into brilliant stories.
