Melody -
What is the range of pitch like?
Is it high or low?
Is the music diatonic or chromatic/dissonant?
Are there big leaps between intervals - this might lend itself more to sweeping lines from Romantic or tragic films?
Articulation -
Is the playing staccato or legato?
Are there any accents? Which notes are accented and why?
Think about specialist string techniques?
Is there use of tremolo?
Dynamics -
Do these change and if so how? Is it a sudden change or a gradual change?
Tempo -
Is the tempo fast or slow (or medium)?
Does it change and if so how? Is it a sudden or gradual change?
Is there use of rubato?
Harmony -
Tonality - is it primarily in a major or minor key?
Is the music consonant (all the notes sound well together) or dissonant (clashing chords)
Is there a modulation (key change)?
Instrumentation -
What families of instruments are predominantly used?
Which instruments play the melodies, countermelodies and accompaniment?
Does the instrumentation change with the extract and how?
Rhythm and Metre -
Is this piece in simple or compound time?
Is it regular or irregular?
Are the beats straight or syncopated?
Are there features such as dotted rhythms or triplets?
Are the notes long and slow (especially in the accompaniment) or do they move quickly?
Texture -
Is the texture thick or thin? Does this change at all? How?
Is the piece homophonic, monophonic or polyphonic?
Does the texture change during the piece? How?
Top Tip: Film/Game music questions are often used for either question 3 (the extended answer) or question 7 (score reading). Be prepared to identify key features (such as instruments and dynamics) whilst following along with a score.
