Design that happens on a flat surface
Can have several layers of complexity
Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, and INKSCAPE are examples of software.
We use Inkscape.

Raster v. Vector Images
Lines, Fills (shapes) and Layers (image)
File Types - MAYBE THE MOST IMPORTANT
SVG
PNG
BMP
Etc.
Print to:
Paper
Laser
Vinyl
Etc.
Lines, Points and Fills make up vector images
Can be layered on top of one another for complex images
A laser cutter will cut any visible or invisible hairline
A vinyl cutter will cut any hairline and also and the border to any fill. This is why when we are done with our design we change the thickness of the STROKE before we send to vinyl cutter.
A raster graphics or bitmap image is a dot matrix data structure that represents a generally rectangular grid of pixels.
Once an image is converted to a Vector (see video for Inkscape below), the images can be manipulated or printed to a laser, vinyl, etc.
Make your own vector drawing using Inkscape (See Inkscape page for help)
Find a raster image that you like and import it into Inkscape.
Convert the image to vector.
Break the image apart by color. Be sure to keep a copy of the original image for reference. If the image is complex you can remove shapes.
