The Mancelona High School staff reveal their thoughts and opinions for the 2023-2024 school year.
With the new teachers and a bond that will bring new accommodations for the school year, 2023 has brought vigor back to the teachers.
Mr. Sheridan
Years prior, Mancelona High School was understaffed or had no extracurricular classes. The COVID-19 pandemic had many staff and students working from home. Brian Sheridan shared, "COVID hurt our schools. A full staff will help us get back on track." This school year we are fully staffed in all departments, and new teachers come with new classes for students to partake in.
The staff at Mancelona High School agree that the school has been making a positive shift. Taylor Borst, Teacher, and Coach, explains,
"Mancelona has always been a good place, but we just forgot that it’s a good place. I think for a few years there, we forgot our pride. We had students that didn’t have pride and we’re slowly starting to restore that and once we realize that we’re going to do some awesome things."
Mr. Borst
Teacher Apley
A part of the improvement this year is the environment and community that the high school has given our new art teacher, Flower Apley, who stated, “I love how small and tight-knit the community is. I love that if I need something at the school, I can go to Someone and get a good report with them”. With improvements and new students, the teachers look forward to a great school year.
Teachers are not the only ones excited to see what this school year will bring. Mr. Borst exclaims, "Especially this year, we have a lot of students who seem excited to be here." For struggling students, just know that your teachers here at Mancelona High School believe in you. Mr. Sheridan shared, "Your teachers care about you and want you to achieve. If they are hard on you that means they care. If they’re not hard on you or holding you to a higher standard that means they’ve given up on you”. Teacher Apley adds, "It’s the student's job to define what success means to them. Rather than focus on being the best academic student in the world, I think it’s important to take this time to realize what you want to take with you into adulthood and what you want to leave behind."
The office's workers Amy Derrer and Geri Jones and the Counselor Michelle Dingman shared their thoughts about how our seniors grew.
The seniors have spent four long years at Mancelona High and during their time here they have grown. Many have been working with Amy Derrer for colleague applications, but all three ladies have watched the seniors go from freshmen at the height of the pandemic to adults who will receive their diplomas by the end of the year
Geri Jones, one of our great office workers, believes that "they have been growing quite well." "Once they got to senior status they consider what to do in life whether it be colleague, a trade school, or just going into the workforce."
"I feel like they are young adults and they're doing well."The seniors have changed a lot according to Michelle Dingman the school’s concealer. "There are always huge changes from freshman year, junior-senior year, more adults like less drama, ready to move on from high school."
And move on they are, because most seniors are now applying to colleagues. With help of Amy Derrer from another office, she shared that while working with the seniors. "A Lot this past month doing colleague applications with seniors, I've seen a lot of growth and maturity in the seniors."
