Pūtaiao – Science has been a passion of mine since my own high school days, and it has opened many doors for me throughout my career. With a background in Biology and Science education (BSc, PGCE Teaching – Secondary), I bring both subject expertise and teaching experience to help our ākonga grow as curious, capable learners.
Science is more than just facts and experiments – it is about equipping young people with critical thinking and problem-solving skills that will prepare them for life beyond school. In today’s world, scientific understanding is at the heart of addressing challenges such as climate change, health, technology, and the environment. Whether it’s developing life-saving medicines or creating innovative solutions for global issues, scientists are constantly shaping the future – and our ākonga can be part of that journey.
I am excited to now call New Zealand home, having moved here with my family in 2024 and beginning my teaching in Westport. I feel very fortunate to continue my teaching journey here at Te Kura Tuarua o Māwhera, where I can share my passion for science and show how it connects to the real world. Helping ākonga see the relevance of science in their own lives, and inspiring them to see themselves as future problem-solvers, is something I truly value.
Please feel free to get in touch if you’d like to kōrero about my teaching or your ākonga’s learning in Science. I look forward to working with you and supporting our students on their learning journey.
Nāku noa, nā,
Bernice Smit
