Unpacking Level 1 NCEA assessments
At our Department Discussion for PE and Health teachers, the NCEA Implementation Facilitator, Amy Moli joined us. Prior to Amy's role at the Ministry of Education, Amy held various Assistant Head of Department roles in Wellington and the Hawkes Bay. She has also been a Within School Lead for her regional Kāhui Ako.
This meeting was an opportunity to discuss the requirements for this year's Level 1 NCEA Achievement Standards. Amy shared with this the various type of evidence students can submit for these assessments, along with the requirements for the external Achievement Standards.

Video analysis for sport performance
Jason Borland, the Head of PE at Papakura High School is experiencing positive engagement and improved achievement outcomes through the use of the online app Vidalyze.
In this presentation, Jason shows us how students use Vidalyze to explain their understanding of biomechanics.
A key benefit of using Vidalyze with students is the functionality they have to edit their own videos. This allows them to show comparisons with their technical skills to highlight their angles and flexibility, a necessary requirement for many of the achivement standards like the ones listed on the right.
Jason finds the online app particularly useful for gatherings student evidence with the following achievement standards:
AS90967 1.6 Demonstrate strategies to improve the performance of a physical activity and describe the outcomes
AS90963 1.2 - Demonstrate understanding of the function of the body as it relates to the performance of physical activity
AS91328 2.2 Demonstrate understanding of how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills
AS91499 3.2 Analyse a physical skill performed by self or others
Developing Literacy in PE
Our first Department Discussion for teachers of PE & Health in 2023, centered around students' learning from their peers and how interactions via a class blog can have a motivational influence on students' achievement outcomes particularly in terms of their writing.

Head of PE at Papakura High School, Jason Borland presented at a Secondary Connect and shared how he is using Vidalyze with his senior students.
With Vidalyze, students are able to upload video footage and critique their own performance techniques. Tools within the app, give students the ability to draw over the top of their video and add a voice over to explain their learning.
Jason, talks about the benefits of students using Vidalyze for assessment evidence with Achievement Standards AS90962 1.2, Participate actively in a variety of physical activities and explain factors that influence own participation, AS91327 2.2, Examine the role and significance of physical activity in the lives of young people in New Zealand.
