Title I Information
What is Title I?
Title I (of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act legislation) is a federal program that provides opportunities for students served to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to meet challenging state content standards. Title I resources are distributed to schools where needs are the greatest, in amounts sufficient to make a difference in the improvement of instruction.
Title I is based on three important ideas:
All children should be provided with equitable opportunities to receive a fair, equitable, and high-quality education, as well as to close educational achievement gaps.
Funds from the Title I program should be used to implement evidence-based practices in literacy, Math, or any other areas to help students who are falling behind their peers due to unfinished learning or who are at risk of falling behind.
Caregivers are partners in helping all students achieve. They have the right to be involved in the design and operation of their school and district's Title I program, and, at the same time, a responsibility to help their children succeed in school.
Students served by Title I funds include migrant children and youth; children and youth with limited English proficiency; children and youth who are homeless; children and youth who have disabilities; children and youth who are neglected, delinquent or at-risk; children in prekindergarten activities; and students who are in academic need.
What Does the Title I Program Look Like in Malden?
The Malden Public Schools utilizes a data-based decision process to determine the best use of the Title I funds each year. This year, the Title I funding will support literacy coaches and reading specialists in each of the buildings 6 Title I buildings. The coaches specifically will be deployed to work with classroom teachers and administration to support the skillful implementation of the new Amplify curriculum in the K-8s. Additionally, Title I funding supports 28 part-time educators for each of the K-8 schools who provide small group instruction to students in need, as well as educators for the two Title I summer programs. Finally, a portion of the Title I funds are devoted to family engagement support and events to ensure that we continue to welcome our families into our schools as partners.
All of our K-8 schools, as well as Malden High School, are school-wide Title I projects. Thus, all students who attend the Beebe, Ferryway, Forestdale, Linden, Malden High School, and Salemwood are Title I students. All families who attend a Malden Public School in grades K-12 can attend any of our Title I events.
