"WHY"
We have intentionally chosen to use Reflective Supervision instead of a traditional evaluation process for the purposes of personal growth and professional growth of all staff members. Staff members set professional and personal goals and meet monthly with their supervisors to discuss progress toward their goals, any possible supports or resources they may need, and how they’re doing overall within the organization. We want all staff members to feel like an integral part of the culture. Keeping open lines of communication and providing support on a consistent basis ensure that people feel their voice is heard. Our reward for happy, affirmed employees is their personal and professional growth. They become more effective, more successful employees by setting and reaching their goals. In the words of Stephen Covey, it’s a win-win!
Reflective Supervision is also in line with the Maker Learning Network philosophy of Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) for our learners. In essence, Reflective Supervision is an ILP for each of our team members. At the beginning of the year, our learners, with the support of their parents and facilitators, set academic and social-emotional goals. The facilitator supports the learners throughout the year as they work to meet their goals. When directors meet monthly with their team members, they are modeling what facilitators should be doing with their learners in order to support them in reaching their goals.
"WHAT"
INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING PLAN (ILP): Your ILP is the driving document in this process and it consists of the following elements - Form A (Goals) which will assist you in setting your goals for the year, Form B (Growth Reflection) which will help you to reflect on your growth throughout the year as well as Form C (Evaluation of Performance) which will serve to identify the areas of your growth as well as areas that still may need improvement to support your continued growth with the MLN.
"HOW"
CHECK-IN MEETINGS: We will have regularly scheduled, group and/or individual check-in meetings to discuss the progress you have made toward your goals. Please come to the meetings with your goals and be prepared to discuss the progress you have made toward your goals.
"WHO"
In order to be effective, the Reflective Supervision process will include you, your accountability or thought partner, and your organization/department leader or supervisor.
"WHEN"
The process takes place throughout the year and is based on the schedule provided in the Resources Drop-Down menu:
Performance evaluations are often antiquated tools that don’t allow for authenticity. Employees often feel a lack of trust and ongoing communication throughout the process. Maker Learning Network has developed its own Reflective Supervision Process that allows for open dialogue and relationship building between the employee and employer. Reflective Supervision does not eliminate the evaluation component but includes it in a more organic fashion. Form C is considered your performance evaluation.
