In 2021, eight artists visited the Argyll Hope Spot to explore, sketch and make new work. You can see some of their work here; 2021 Gallery. They worked on the shore and in the water - even sketching whilst snorkelling. Their work brought to life scenes that we don’t normally see, and are not often represented through art. Audiences have found their work captivating and it really helped to shine a light on the importance of the habitats within the Argyll Hope Spot. In 2022 we were joined by a further 11 artists including printmakers, designers, sculptors, musicians, writers and a tattoo artist.
In 2023 we are offering eight artists the opportunity to learn, work and play above and below the waves over four days in August. Throughout the residency you can expect;
Expert swimming and snorkelling tuition to help you feel safe and confident in the water.
Safety briefings.
Safety cover from our qualified safety swimmer and experienced snorkel guide.
The chance to study marine species and habitats up-close whilst snorkelling or in tanks.
Time spent practising observing, sketching and mark-making in the water with tuition from experienced marine artists.
Opportunities to learn about the habitats and species you observe from local ecologists.
Opportunities to learn about community-led projects that are restoring and enhancing marine biodiversity.
Time to make creative work in a local community space.
To meet and collaborate with other creative practitioners who are curious about Scotland's marine and coastal habitats.
Even close to shore Argyll's waters offer the chance to see a wide range of marine plants and animals. You’ll meet many colourful species including anemones, starfish, urchins, fish, sponges, soft corals, crustaceans, bivalves, seagrass, seaweeds, kelp and more. From the shore you will encounter seabirds, marine mammals and otters. You might be surprised by the abundance of life only metres from shore. Learn more on our website: https://argyllhopespot.scot/
