What you need to know before applying:

• Applicants must be able to swim a minimum of 50m in a pool or open water. You do not have to be an experienced open water swimmer, although some experience of swimming in Scottish seas would be an advantage. The water will be quite cold, and you might be swimming in moderate tides, and out of your depth. Our experienced safety swimmers will be on hand to help keep you safe. You will be expected to follow their instruction to keep yourself and others safe. If you have any questions regarding swimming please get in touch with Keira; keira@make-do.studio

• Each day will start at around 10:00am, and finish at around 5:30pm, Monday to Friday. Wednesday is a rest day. 

• The residency will be based at Kilchoan Melfort Trust and accommodation will be provided on-site from afternoon of Sunday 30th August - morning of Saturday 5th September.

• Unfortunately we are unable to cover travel costs or other expenses. If this is a barrier to your participation, please get in touch. See "Our residency 2026" page for more info on costs.

• There is no fee to artists for taking part in the residency. We have been funded by the William Grant Foundation, Hugh Fraser Foundation and Craignish Trust - allowing us to pay our tutors and swimmers for their time developing and leading the residency.

• Lunches and snacks are provided each day (except the rest day on Wednesday) and we will share one communal dinner. You'll need to provide your own meals outwith this. Full kitchen facilities are provided.

• Applicants must be aged 16+. There is no upper age limit.

• Some of our swimming locations will require a short walk on a level track whilst carrying snorkelling equipment and art materials.

• Most sessions will take place outdoors. You will need to bring suitable clothing.

• If successful, we will ask you to confidentially provide us with any relevant medical information.

• You must be available for the full term of the residency; arriving in Argyll on Sunday 30th August, and departing after our final session on Friday 4th September (optionally you can stay until Saturday morning).

• You might be required to share a room with fellow residents. We can accommodate requests for single occupation of rooms, where needed.

• We expect respectful and mature behaviour from our participants and staff towards each other, local communities and wildlife.

• We provide the above information so that you feel prepared when making your application. We do not seek to limit anyone’s involvement in this opportunity.
