My current book project is titled Avant-Garde Arcadia: Pastoral in Modern Iberian Poetry.
From Madrid’s ultraísmo to Lisbon’s arch-modernist Fernando Pessoa, from Catalan haiku to Miguel Hernández, the popular “shepherd poet” of Spain’s Civil War, the ancient mode of pastoral shoots through early twentieth-century poetry in Iberia with a fascinating modern slant. Avant-Garde Arcadia interrogates the presence of this bucolic mode in urban poets’ work in Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, and French. In doing so, it offers a fresh theorization of the avant-garde in terms of competing modern temporalities.
