Zhao Xuan, Ph.D. (she/her/hers)
zhao.xuan@maine.edu
I received my B.S. degree in Biology, specializing in Marine Biology, from Ocean University of China and my M.S. degree in Biology from Drexel University. I earned my Ph.D. in Neuroscience from Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, investigating the physiological functions of the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) protein presenilin1 (the catalytic subunit of γ-secretase) in the lab of Dr. Nikolaos Robakis. I received my postdoc training from Dr. Daniel Colón-Ramos at Yale University School of Medicine. During my postdoctoral training, I focused on understanding the molecular mechanisms that act in vivo to orchestrate the formation and function of the presynaptic structure. Outside of work, I enjoy reading, yoga and family time.

Graduate students
Kwaku Agyekum
Kwaku is a MS student whose research interests span investigating the mechanisms that precede synaptopathies. He is originally from Ghana, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. Currently, he is investigating the regulation of endocytic factors in neurons. He loves to play soccer during my free time
Bright Asante
Bright is a PhD student at the Xuan Lab. His research interests are studying how mutations in active zone and periactive zone genes at presynaptic terminals contribute to deficits in neurotransmission using C. elegans as a model organism. He loves to sing and listen to good music.
Undergraduate students
Elaina Cote
I am a junior majoring in molecular and cellular biology (Class of 2025). My research interests include neurobiology, behavioral disorders, and autoimmune disease. In my free time I love to embroider!
Benjamin Hunt
As an aspiring physician, Benjamin plans to support Maine communities as they seek to rebuild and strengthen their health. His research interests include the dysfunctions of neurons and the digestive system associated with behavioral and environmental drivers. He seeks solutions to neurologic and chronic diseases with a focus on strategies for limiting their onset and reestablishing proper function. A resident of Downeast Maine, he enjoys exploring Maine’s seaside and wilderness.
Timothy Hunt
Timothy Hunt has always been captivated by the complexities of human health and how healthcare can have a positive impact on people’s lives. Timothy's aspirations as a physician are centered around serving communities in Maine with compassion, dedication, and scientifically anchored approaches. He is pursuing a BS in Biology with a pre-med concentration (Junior, Class of 2025). Timothy’s research interests include the function of the neuronal synapse and the microbiome associated with the digestive system. He is fascinated to unravel the intricacies of synapse dysfunctions that underlie various neurological disorders. Timothy and his dog, Trooper, enjoy embarking on adventures across Maine's lush forests and serene lakes.
Lili Rodrigues
The human body, especially the central nervous system, has always amazed me. The intricate nature of the system alone excites and inspires me, while the clinical implications of research done in this field are a driving force for me. I am an aspiring physician-scientist earning a B.S. in microbiology and psychology with a minor in neuroscience. My research interests include synapse formation signaling, the neurobiology of memory, and neuro-oncology. Outside of my studies, I enjoy playing chess, boxing, and completing puzzles.
