Institute for Environmental Journalism - Summer Field Institute at College of the Atlantic

  • Application deadline: Typically due in winter/spring (apply earlier to increase chances of financial aid)

  • Summary: "An examination of the nation’s most pressing environmental concerns through ambitious journalism immersed in the rugged coast of Maine, embracing science journalism as a tool to provoke meaningful conversations about climate and the broader environment."

  • Program dates: Typically about 10 days in July

  • Location: College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine

  • Transportation/housing: Fees, housing, and transportation are the responsibility of the student, but there are need-based scholarships available to cover these expenses.

  • Eligibility: Open to rising 10th-12th grade students as well as recent high school graduates. Other requirements may apply.

Princeton Summer Journalism Program

  • Summary: A 10-day introduction to journalism. Learn from reporters from major media outlets. Students cover events and produce their own newspaper.

Student Conservation Association National Crews

  • Summary: "SCA’s National Crews offer you a chance to visit places you’ve never seen before, camping with your crew members in the field to enjoy nature at its best. You’ll be building trails, conserving vital habitats, and protecting natural resources."

  • Summary: Upward Bound will help coordinate an informational interview (which is an opportunity to meet with a professional to ask them questions about their job) and/or a job shadow. To begin the process, complete the form by clicking the above link.

  • Program dates: Dates will be scheduled based on the professional's availability

  • Location: Southern Maine

  • Transportation/housing: Students are usually responsible for their own transportation. That being said, if you need help getting to the interview or job shadow, please let us know, and we will help you get there!

  • Eligibility: Any UB student who is interested in learning more about the health care field.

Junior Volunteer Program at Maine Medical Center

  • Application deadline: Typically due in winter

  • Summary: Areas Junior Volunteers may serve in include: Retail Shops, Information Desk/Escort, Cafeteria, Mail Room, Admitting, Hospital Elder Life, and Volunteer Services.

  • Program dates: Summer; Have the ability to volunteer from 8:00 am – 3:30 pm on the same weekday for the duration of the program. A minimum of 50 service hours are required.

  • Location: Maine Medical Center

Summer Student Program at The Jackson Laboratory

Summer Student Research Program at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute

  • Application deadline: Typically due in winter

  • Summary: Research at MMCRI covers a broad area in biomedical science including vascular biology, stem cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology, hematology, nephrology, tumor biology, and molecular genetics as well as outcomes research, vector-borne diseases, and clinical research.

  • Program dates: Summer

  • Location: Some positions are based in Scarborough, some at other Maine Medical Center campuses.

Islands Through Time - Summer Field Institute at College of the Atlantic

  • Summary: "Study and explore marine biology, field ecology, history, literature, writing, painting and sketching, and public policy; Spend several nights at the college’s island field station; Visit whale feeding grounds, seal haul-outs, seabird colonies, and small island villages; Gain first-hand experience in data collection and research with natural historians at offshore island research stations; Explore writing and literature with college professors while visiting the places you are reading about and honing your own writing skills." Students are eligible to earn two college credits for completing this program.

  • Location: College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine

Maine Space Grant Consortium, MERITS Student Program

  • Summary: "Provides summer research opportunities to Maine high school [rising seniors] in host institutions across the state. Students who are interested in STEM fields and would like to experience “real-time” applications of STEM in a research-focused work world conducting research and technology development should apply."

  • Program dates: Six weeks during summer

  • Location: Host institutions are located across the state. Program tries to match applicants to a host institution within 60 miles traveling distance (one way) of the applicant’s residence.

  • Transportation/housing: Students are responsible for their own transportation and housing.

  • Eligibility: Rising senior. Other requirements apply.

Summer Student Program at The Jackson Laboratory

  • Application deadline: Typically due in winter

  • Summary: "The Summer Student Program is designed for students who want to immerse themselves in genetics and genomics research. It emphasizes laboratory discovery, communication of knowledge, and professional growth. "

  • Program dates: 10 weeks during summer

  • Location: Bar Harbor, Maine

  • Transportation/housing: Transportation and housing are covered by the program.

  • Eligibility: Students must have completed Grade 11* or Grade 12; be at least 16 years old; be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident; * in 2020, high school seniors will receive admissions preference for high school fellowships in the SSP.
