Teens in Aroostok, Franklin, Lincoln, Piscataquis & Washington still needed!
How can I prepare for serving as a delegate?
Complete the necessary paperwork as soon as possible:
Media Release for all delegates. Return to Sharon Gerrish at sharonr@maine.edu.
Emergency Contact / Parent Google Form for delegates under 18 years-old.
Waiver for all delegates, with an addendum for delegates under 18 years old.
Delegates are expected to attend at least one of the two one-hour Zoom preparation sessions where we will:
meet and get to know each other,
become familiar with the Comhairle (pronounced Core-luh) platform, and
have an introduction to the citizens' assembly model.
What is involved in the learning process?
Engaging in shared learning with other delegates is a key part of any citizens' assembly. There are several steps, and we will walk through each of them together. We plan to provide a variety of learning opportunities and modalities before and during the assembly to ensure delegates can appropriately engage in the learning process. If the way you learn best is not built into the process already, please let us know.
Before the assembly you will be introduced to Comhairle, where you first completed the volunteer form. On Comhairle you will be able to access reports, briefs, and videos to give you a broad understanding of the education policy and problem landscape in Maine. Many of these materials have been created by us at the Maine Education Policy Research Institute (MEPRI) or the Center for Education Policy, Applied Research, and Evaluation (CEPARE). Others have been created by community organizations such as Maine Development Foundation, Count ME In!, and Maine Education Association. These community organizations are MEPRI Steering Committee members plus a handful of other statewide education organizations we selected to bring breadth and depth to delegates' learning. We expect delegates will spend up to a few hours familiarizing themselves with materials before the assembly begins.
During the assembly the first day is dedicated to learning. Delegates will explore stories shared by Maine students, educators, and community members through the Maine School Stories Portal; hear from former Education and Cultural Affairs Committee members and education experts on panels; receive briefings from MEPRI staff; and interact with community organization leaders in focused Q&A sessions. A variety of modalities will be available to ensure all delegates can access the appropriate knowledge base needed for deliberation. On days two and three, delegates can refer back at any time to learning materials on Comhairle.
Forgot how to log into Comhairle?
You should all have received an "Invitation to join the Delegates' Hub" email from noreply@comhairle.scot . It contains a link which invites you to join the Delegates' Hub, your dedicated space for information and tools related to the Citizens' Assembly. Arriving on the site please create an account by providing a username, your email address (that the invitation was sent to) and creating a password, to return to the site. If you ever forget your password, just click on "Log in" in the top right hand corner of the screen then scroll down and click on "Forgot your password?" and you'll get a reset password email within a couple of minutes. If you have any persistent difficulties accessing the site you can contact Andy at andy@crown-shy.com.
Notes from the first Orientation Call, May 26
You may be wondering, what should I be doing now?
1. Sign into Comhairle. Directions, if you forget, are above.
2. Look around and get comfortable with the interface.
3. Dip into materials as you feel drawn to do so and jot down questions you may have. More will be coming in the next week with most if not all being included by June 10.
4. Listen to stories on the Maine School Stories Portal
5. If you were not at the orientation call, review the slides and/or watch the video for an overview of the assembly. These are in an email from Jennifer on May 27.
What's next?
Block your calendar for June 10, 7pm!
Andy will guide you through practicing using the tools CrownShy has been designing for you, to help you make the most of the learning materials and to get you into the delegate mindset with opportunities to reflect on your opinions and experiences regarding education and schooling.
There will also be a lengthier opportunity for discussion with your fellow delegates as you practice listening and collaboratively making sense of a brief audio recording from the Maine School Stories Portal.
HS students are invited to stay for fifteen minutes afterward for a quick check in.
