Bigelow Hollow, Island View (Emma Grous 08/04/2019)
What do I value the most as a Writing Consultant? Other than the incredibly comfortable couches in the Writing Center, I value the identities of my peers within our academic community. How do I show this? What do I do? Well...
I believe that writing that isn't personal is writing that is boring.
Being able to express myself and my identity through writing helped me to connect to my assignments on a more personal level.
I hope to help other students strengthen the quality of pieces they produce by negotiating a balance of identity and academic expectations.
But what is identity and what are these academic expectations?
Here at the University of Maine we, as students, can expect to be taught to write in specific ways that follow the Conventions of Academic Discourse...
What does this mean?
There are often 'rules' associated with writing in different contexts or when you are filling certain academic identities. These academic discoruse expectations are outlined in a rubrics, guides, and other documents that we may encounter in our course work, just like the PAR Rubric that is given to students in English 101 as they are introduced to the academic writing discourse at the University of Maine!
What identities are we supposed to assume as students?
Researchers?
Authors?
Sociologists?
Scientists?
Historians?
By being able to balance these academic identities and expectations with who we are as people, our passions and values, we can be more confident in the work that we produce.

So now that you know the secret, why should you come to the Writing Center?
Identities are constantly shifting and changing!
Each writer is unique and may need to develop different skills to balance these identities.
Writers who engage with the academic community outside of their classes (through the Writing Center!) can still learn from peers and professionals.
We can all learn from one another and grow both personally, professionally, and academically.
As you develop your own blended identity as an author the work that you produce becomes more unique and more invaluable!
