This portfolio summarizes my English education background, which includes graduate-level studies in TESOL, Literacy, and Professional Writing from the University of Southern Maine and the University of Maine Farmington.
Through my TESOL, Literacy Education, and Professional Writing programs, I have completed coursework in linguistics, literacy, language and culture, grant writing, and related areas.
These experiences have solidified my expertise and professional preparation in English.
As I reflect on this academic journey, I see a clear progression in how my understanding of language, literacy, and communication has evolved from viewing English as a subject to understanding it as a social, cultural, and rhetorical practice.
My TESOL courses grounded me in the linguistic foundations necessary for effective English instruction. Courses in linguistics and second language acquisition helped me understand how phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics influence language learning, particularly for multilingual learners. Through this work, I learned to analyze learner language not as deficit-based error, but as evidence of interlanguage development and cognitive growth (Ellis, 2008; Lightbown & Spada, 2021). This shift changed how I approach instruction, assessment, and feedback in English education.
My studies in Literacy Education further expanded my perspective by emphasizing literacy as a socially situated practice shaped by culture, identity, and power. Courses focused on literacy, language, and culture reinforced the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy and the need to honor students’ linguistic and cultural assets. Engaging with scholarship on disciplinary literacy and reading development strengthened my ability to design instruction that supports comprehension, critical thinking, and academic language development across content areas. These experiences deepened my commitment to equitable reading instruction, particularly for multilingual and historically marginalized learners.
The Professional Writing program added a critical applied dimension to my English education by preparing me to write for real audiences beyond the classroom. I developed a strong foundation in business and professional communication, learning to navigate internal and external audiences, apply the Seven C’s of effective communication, and design clear, audience-centered documents. Professional writing shaped my understanding of how tone, grammar, rhetorical strategy, and document design function together in workplace genres, while also helping me refine job materials and assemble a professional writing dossier relevant to my career goals.
This portfolio represents an integrated professional identity shaped by TESOL, Literacy Education, and Professional Writing.
The interdisciplinary nature of my studies has strengthened my ability to teach, write, and lead with intention, cultural awareness, and rhetorical precision. Most importantly, it has reinforced my belief that English education is not simply about language proficiency, but about empowering learners through literacy, voice, and meaningful communication.
