Course Description

CHY 114, Laboratory techniques I, is designed to be an introduction to working in a chemistry lab. The overall purpose is twofold: 

1. To reinforce and illustrate chemical concepts learned in CHY 113, and 

2. To provide an introduction to the various experimental, analytical, and reporting tools used in chemistry.

By the end of the semester, you will be able to:

• work safely in a laboratory environment, 

• prepare samples and solutions using an analytical balance and appropriate volumetric  glassware, 

• make use various probes and sensors to take measurements,

• carry out basic "wet lab" techniques such as titration,

• separate and identify compounds using chromatography and spectroscopy,

• construct calibration curves to determine concentration of an unknown,

• utilize statistical tools to determine validity of data,

• analyze data and discuss the significance of the results, and

• present your results in a clear format. 

• use online databases to access scholarly work and cite it within a written report.
