Information Booklet
GENERAL RULES
WALK - Do not run on the lanai, in the covered walkways, or anywhere on campus.
Walk bikes on and off campus; be sure they are locked in the bike rack.
Cell phones are ONLY allowed if they are OFF all day and the school is not responsible if they are stolen. It is recommended that students NOT bring them.
Do not bring large amounts of money to school or wear lots of expensive jewelry unless you are going to be personally responsible for it. Students who find themselves with such things can ask a teacher or the office to hold them safely until after school.
CAMPUS and PLAYGROUND/RECESS RULES
Respect the teachers and adult supervisors who are on duty to support and protect you.
Before school: Students wait for class in front of or in their rooms.
NO dangerous rough-playing or throwing things around.
Toys and electronic items from home are not allowed.
No abusive or profane language at any time.
NO dodgeball, NO football (or football related games) and NO tag.
During play, if balls, etc. go out onto the streets, students are to report and ask the teachers or adult supervisors to retrieve the balls, etc.
During rainy days, recess will be indoors or on the lanai areas at grade level buildings.
Name tag must be worn to play at recess.
CONTRABAND
It is difficult to write a comprehensive list of everything that is NOT allowed in school. It is easier to say what IS allowed: books, pens, pencils, healthy snacks and water.
Contraband is always confiscated. It can be returned at the end of the day or kept for parent pick up at the school’s discretion. Repeated confiscation will lead to the item(s) being available for pick up on the last day of school for the year.
NOT ALLOWED: Toys, games, electronic items, playground equipment, gum, candy, trading cards (pokemon, etc.), anything dangerous (knives, guns, firecrackers, bullets, any fireworks, heelys, mace, pepper spray, matches, air guns, BB guns, look-alike toy guns, etc.). Federal law mandates a full one year suspension from school for any student who brings a gun onto campus. This includes all guns, even BB guns, after school, on weekends or on any DOE campus.
CONSEQUENCES for breaking the rules:
Students are corrected and counseled to problem-solve with better choices.
Most violations are given 1-3 days of detention. Repeat violations are given additional days of detention.
All incidents of violence or stealing are considered serious. Administration reserves the right to suspend students for their first offense if it is very serious. If students need the support, school-level counseling is provided to help them learn how to cope and or skills to be successful in school (following rules, getting along with others, etc).
UNIFORM POLICY
ALL STUDENTS ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A UNIFORM SHIRT on Monday through Thursday.
Sizes, style and color choices are described by the Ma’ili School Vendor on information sheets provided.
NO MODIFICATIONS to the school uniform will be allowed. There are sufficient options to select from the order form which compensates for some individuality and gender.
Bottoms are not a required uniform item; however shorts, skirts, or skorts must conform to the established Dress Code listed below.
CONSEQUENCES OF NON-COMPLIANCE
Non-compliance with the Uniform Dress Code Policy will be considered a Class C Offense (insubordination) and students will be disciplined according to Chapter 19 and School Discipline Guidelines. Parents will be asked to help make sure their children are in compliance with the uniform policy. Parents/guardians may be called to bring a change of clothing or the school may provide the student with a gently-used uniform.
DRESS CODE AND STUDENT APPEARANCE
Māʻili Elementary School believes that the standard of dress and grooming should be the primary responsibility of the parents and students as well as the staff members and other adults who work or volunteer at Ma’ili Elementary and with the understanding that appropriate clothing and grooming reflect good taste, does not violate rules of decency, does not offend the standards of others, nor distract from the educational program. Administrators may make exceptions to the dress code on an individual basis in order to accommodate extenuating circumstances.
