FIRST 2020 GENERAL MEETING: Friday, October 9th at 2:00pm via Zoom
As socialists, we believe that education is an ongoing struggle in a capitalist society. That makes political education a core pillar of the socialist project, so that we can critique and break down existing power structures designed to preserve the traditional social order. Political education is a lifelong process, for socialists new and old.
All too often our classes at WOU and throughout high school encouraged rote memorization of historical dates and facts, without challenging us to learn from history and apply it to the present. Socialists think that method of education sucks, so we have decided to provide an alternative.
Universities should radically challenge the preexisting views of students and expand our horizons when we imagine what's possible. That's why we've partnered with YDSA National to put on informal political education events open to the entire WOU community in an effort to educate our members and the WOU community at-large about socialism, past, present, and future.
Our School of Socialism is an informal discussion guided by a curriculum designed by the YDSA National Political Education Committee. We'll share the dates of these events on our social media and encourage all students, faculty, and staff at WOU interested in learning more about socialism to attend. These events are free and open to all, and we will make every effort to make it worth your while. These aren't classes, no grades will be assigned, and we'll meet for 1-2 hours once a week to discuss socialist theory, history, and formulate our own opinions that we discuss in groups. Please join us!
We may decide to start running the School of Socialism during the Summer, if enough WOU students are interested! We'll keep you updated on our social media pages and add dates to the sessions below as they are planned.
