Rehabilitation
The environment is a problem for Bethany, and independence can be achieved through compensating. The first step is being able to have Bethany be independent is when it comes to dressing and helping around the house. She can then go into training to learn how to paddle, balance, and pop up on the board using only one arm, but traditional surfboards are not optimized for individuals with upper limb amputations, especially during duck dives and wave navigation. This causes an inability to grip/stabilize during maneuvers, which limits performance.
Why this Approach?
Bethany's condition is permanent (left arm amputation)
Bethany is aware of the challenge/deficits
Bethany can recall the activity and how it works
Motivation: The client is intrinsically driven to participate in meaningful tasks, adapting as needed to succeed
In Bethany's case, she does not care what she has to do to get back out on the water as long as she is able to
Interventions
Through the use of assistance
Pre-fastened suits: Family members can pre-tie bathing suits so Bethany can slip them on independently, preserving dignity and autonomy
Precut food: Family members can precut/ slice ingredients so that Bathany can be more independent while making meals
Through the use of adaptive technology/equipment
Stretchable fabrics: Incorporating elastic materials that conform to her body without needing adjustments or ties
Magnetic/Velcro swimsuits: Easier to put on and take off with one hand, avoiding having to tie
Adaptive Cutting Board: Allows food to be stabilize while being cut so that things like round fruits and vegetables don't roll around
Through the use of modifications
Altering the surfboard to have a handle so Bethany can stay caught up with her components and have the same advantages that her competition has
Goal: Bethany can adapt to the environment, task, and deficits through the use of adaptive equipment, adaptive technology, assistance, and modifications
After adapting to the task through alternative methods...
Bethany can engage in activities of choice in a way that she finds satisfying and meaningful, like surfing and cooking for/with her family
Bethany can complete activities with a full level of independence, like dressing and preparing meals
