For my second student teaching placement I taught 6th-8th grade art at Calkins Road Middle School and Barker Road Middle School in the fall of 2023. Our projects included memory lanterns, salt and pepper shakers, and identity totem poles.
6th grade created clay Memory lanterns. We focused on the Big Idea of Memory. Students were given the task to create a lantern out of clay with imagery that represented a special memory the student had. Students learned about clay slab building, and carving and etching techniques.
7th grade created clay salt and pepper shakers. We focused on the Big Idea of Connection. Students were given the task to create a set of salt and pepper shakers that were connected in some way. Students learned about pinch pots, clay building techniques, and applying glaze.
8th grade created clay identity totem poles. We focused on the Big Idea of Identity. Students were given the task to create a a totem pole consisting of a clay head self portrait, a type of food, and an object of personal significance.
