Let's look at two different schools. One who handled bullying poorly and another who handled it in an successful manner.
Trigger Warning: mentions of suicide.
Felicia LoAlbo-Melendez was a 11 year old girl who committed suicide in her school bathroom as a result of bullying at F.W Holbein School in Mount Holly, New Jersey. Many of the students used racist and homophobic insults in order to attack her. Despite teachers seeing the bullying taking place in their classrooms, they did not do anything about it. Felicia reached out multiple times to her counselors and school officials, but they also did nothing for her. In the previous school years, the school she attended was observed to have a “severe underreporting of bullying incidents” (Eberhart, 2023, para. 22). Due to not having a proper anti-bullying policy in place, as well as unsuccessful training for teachers, the bullying of Felicia continued, leading to her death. Some schools address when they were in the wrong and attempt to fix their policies, but this school said nothing in regards to it. Instead of fixing their mistakes, the district of Felicia’s school did not change their policy, meaning this can happen again in their school district.
Gabriel Taye was a 8 year old boy who attended Carson Elementary School in Cincinnati, Ohio. He committed suicide as a result of bullying. Instead of moving on from this tragedy as if it never happened, the school district changed its policies on bullying in order to make them more successful. They now have a “bully button” on each school’s website to report bullying. They also started “training staff, educating students, and establishing protocols for investigating and responding to incidents. Incidents are logged into a database, parents are notified, and patterns are tracked” (St. George, 2023, para. 70-71). They also added a social worker to the school district that focuses specifically on bullying. In two years, they made significant improvements to their anti-bullying policies (St. George, 2023, para. 72). After a bullying incident, they make sure the students accept responsibility as well as learn from their actions. Despite the tragedy that happened in their school district, school staff changed their ways which will help prevent this from happening again.
