(English Immersion Courses)

Junior High School Courses (6-8 weekly English Immersion classes)
What is Lio-Ho High School’s “English Immersion program?” The Junior High School English Immersion classes at Lio-Ho are 100% English instructional classes taught by authentic English speaking-teachers who have moved to Taiwan from abroad. They have received their teacher certifications abroad in an English-speaking country such as Canada and USA and have decided to continue their teaching careers in Taiwan.
English Immersion is a form of Bilingual Education in which students who do not speak English as a first language receive classroom instruction in English.
Our English Immersion program at Lio-Ho High school is different from the mainstream ESL (English as a Second Language) style of language learning in Taiwan where students are taught English by Non-Authentic English-speaking teachers giving classroom instructions in Mandarin Chinese. In our English Immersion program, all of our students (the majority language group—Mandarin Chinese speaking) are “voluntarily” immersed in the minority language (English) environment, and such immersion-type of English education is atypical of most language learning norms in Taiwan classrooms, where the predominant classroom instructions are always given in Mandarin Chinese.
Lio-Ho High School’s English Immersion program is based on the French Immersion program developed in Canada in the 1960s, as Canada is an English-French bilingual country—many Canadian schools have been offering French immersion programs to English speaking students for the past 60 years, and our school is modeled in the same Canadian Immersion language teaching and learning style in English.
Therefore, at Lio-Ho High School, our students receive teaching instructions in English at one hundred percent of their instructional class time, this is called "total immersion," and in this style of learning, students are immersed in 100% English language learning environment and are required to understand instructional material in English, allowing them to gradually adapt to using English as their dominant learning language.
