An impromptu speech is a speech which is given without any thorough preparation. The aim of this activity is to learn and practice the skills needed to speak extemporaneously on general topics.
The student selects a random topic which is on a common and easily understood subject. The topic may be a word, a phrase, a question, or expression. The student has one minute of preparation time before speaking. The speech must be 2 minutes in length. No research materials may be used. The student must present his/her speech spontaneously. The speech can be in any style: entertaining, informative, or persuasive. (e.g. If the topic chosen is Pepsi, the speaker may give an informative speech about the physical effects of drinking colas, or an entertaining speech about the first time she drank a Pepsi.) The speech must have a clear structure: introduction, middle, end.
Rules:
The speech must be 2 minutes in duration
Students may make notes on the on a piece of paper during the 1-minute preparation time. The note card may be used during the speech, but should be used only for occasional referencing, not as a written speech.
The speech must be about the topic chosen.
