“Orientation” is defined as the initial work that is done with the peer partners in the LINKS program. The purpose is to provide information about the focus student(s) they will be paired with, a basic understanding of autism and/or other disabilities, the importance of the participation model, and the specifics of coursework and/or program expectations. Often, orientation is completed before the start of the school year, during an orientation meeting, or throughout the first week of school.
During orientation, consider covering:
Staff introductions
Student introductions
Getting to Know You Connector Activities
Use videos from the Padlet or district/school-made videos that highlight your Peer to Peer Program
Define the LINKs/peer partner role to ensure your program is a Participation Program
Neurodiversity and strength-based information
Expectations
Focus Student Supports (e.g., communication systems/AAC, visual supports, etc. that are utilized for support)
Syllabus review and curricular expectations
Provide time for the students to review the Pass the Torch assignment
