Peer to Peer is rooted in evidence-based practices, offering a win-win for all students involved. It provides a reliable framework for building meaningful connections and friendships, ensuring that peer partnerships are thoughtfully and intentionally integrated throughout the school day in both academic and nonacademic settings. As students with and without disabilities learn about each other and build trust, a range of positive outcomes naturally follows. These include reduced anxiety, an enhanced sense of belonging, increased confidence, higher engagement within the school community, and opportunities that extend well beyond the school environment.
Extensive research continues to highlight the advantages of Peer to Peer. Participants in the program gain valuable opportunities to practice social and communication skills, engage actively in class activities, form lasting relationships, experience a strong sense of belonging, and reduce their reliance on paraprofessional support (Carter et al., 2015). Moreover, peers play a key role in promoting access to and engagement in inclusive environments.
A study by Carter et al. (2024) found that students with severe disabilities were academically engaged in their general education classrooms for an average of 74.9% of observations when in close proximity to peers, compared to just 46.9% when not near peers. Inclusion in the same settings and connections formed through Peer to Peer serve as a foundation for these vital relationships.
Research and data further reveal that Peer to Peer increases LINK peer partner attendance, decreases behavioral referrals, and improves GPAs. Adolescents have consistently reported that friendships are the most significant factor influencing their quality of life (Helseth & Misvaer, 2010). When students have a compelling reason to attend school, all other areas of their lives are positively impacted. These connections enrich the school experience, making it about much more than academics—it's about creating meaningful opportunities and engaging in experiences that enhance quality of life. This is the power of Peer to Peer.
