Online academic findings, historical analysis, ethnography, and Social Media presence all played a vital role in the success of my research and understanding of my focus on the online knitting community. I used my knowledge of these methods from when I took COM 262, Research Methods, to complete my research.
Historical analysis was the first method of research used in order to gain proper insight into the history I was focusing on. Many of these sources came from excerpts out of journals, websites that focused on historical context, and class readings to create the connection needed for further understanding. Looking into the historical context of the specific topics of the history of online communities and knitting was what weaved these key concepts together, as well as offering a basis of understanding in order to then focus on the current online community.
Ethnography was my second method of research, bringing my own observations of the online social media community of knitting to the table. This was the first step I took in order to feel the connection and inclusivity within the Instagram space. Discussing with fellow knitters with a range of following showed how down-to-earth and supportive each creator is.
Interviewing was my final method. Though it was via email, I still felt a personal connection with the three female knitters I spoke with. They made the effort to still be available for further questions if needed, and one even has become a friend because of our common upbringing.
