8 to 10 months before conference
Submit a proposal for funding of your symposium outside of SICB. Earlier is better. Consider NSF, Company of Biologists, other agencies, foundations, or companies (e.g., equipment suppliers).
In recent years, NSF IOS (Integrative Organismal Systems) has funded two to three of the SICB symposia each year. IOS has IOS-specific guidelines for symposium proposals in addition to the general guidelines for funding requests for conferences.
Reach out to the NSF IOS divisional program officer (Kathy Dickson, email: kdickson@nsf.gov) to discuss the process, when to apply, and how much to request. You can also reach out to the SICB Program Officer. Example proposals from prior SICB symposia are available by clicking here to request access to the files.
NSF will not fund travel for non-US presenters traveling to the meeting from abroad.
A link to funding sites is also available on the home page under Resources (bottom on home page).
In recent years, CoB has funded three to five of the SICB symposia each year.
Example proposals from prior SICB symposia are available by clicking here to request access to the files. Access and example budget by clicking here to request access.
Company of Biologists will fund international travel.

Consider reaching out to companies and organizations that regularly exhibit at the SICB annual meetings. You can find them in past programs.
Consider reaching out to organizations and companies who you collaborate with.
