Miguel is currently a Data Scientist at Google. Based in Mountain View, California he serves on the Shopping Analytics team where he designs and analyzes the result of randomized control trials and causal models. Prior to Google, Miguel worked as a Quantitative Analyst for Bank of America where he validated credit risk models for conceptual soundness, limitations, and performance. In addition to his work at Google, he serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Economics in the San Mateo Community College District. Miguel holds a Masters of Science (M.S.) in Applied Economics and Finance from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He also holds a Bachelor's of Arts (B.A.) in Economics and a Bachelor's of Science (B.S.) in Mathematics-Statistics from Fresno State.
Ji Y. Son, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology and Director of the Learning Lab at California State University, Los Angeles. She co-authored Statistics and Data Science: A Modeling Approach (CourseKata.org), an interactive textbook used by over 120 institutions (and used by over 20,000 students) to modernize the teaching of statistics and data science. Her research applies cognitive science to improve student learning, focusing on scaling evidence-based teaching methods, fostering transferable quantitative reasoning, and integrating modern computational tools into foundational education. Through CourseKata, she leverages real student data to iteratively refine instructional materials, making statistical modeling and data analysis more accessible. Her work aims to empower all students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds, to not only navigate but actively shape an increasingly data-driven world.
