The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) dates back to 1974, when Edward Coleman, Anthony Harris, Brian Harris, Stanley L. Kirtley, John W. Logan Jr., and George Smith the “Chicago Six”, formed what was known as the Society of Black Engineers. The first annual meeting was held in April of 1975 with 48 students from 32 different schools, where they voted to form the National Society of Black Engineers. John Cason was the first elected president of the organization in 1976, then two years later Virginia Booth became the first female national chair to serve two terms. In 1989 NSBE Alumni was formed and then the following year the NSBE Jr. chapter was formed in 1990. NSBE has grown from 6 founding members (the "Chicago Six") to over 30,000 members, and from 1 chapter to more than 790 chapters. The first Black woman to run for president was a major supporter of NSBE. She even launched the first international chapter in London England in 1992!
The NSE Torch symbolizes our everlasting burning desire to achieve success in this competitive society and to affect a positive change on the quality of life for all people. The lightning bolts represents the striking impact that will be felt by the Society and industry due to the contributions and accomplishments made by dedicated members of the National Society of Black Engineers.
