RQ1: What factors influence members of Gen Z to watch a film?
RQ2: How do members of Gen Z feel about the current market of sequels, remakes, and adaptation films?
RQ2b: Are members of Gen Z aware of the current market saturation of sequels, remakes, and adaptation films?
RQ2c: What factors do members of Gen Z feel make a quality sequel, adaptation, or remake?
RQ3: What methods, if any, are members of Gen Z using to share their opinions with others after watching these types of films?
For this study, a survey will be conducted. Survey will be the best methodology to use in order to gauge how the audiences are feeling about the current market saturation of sequels, adaptations, and remakes, how and where they are discussing these feelings, as well as which factors influence them to watch a film. To complete this, a comprehensive list of survey questions will be created and disseminated. A survey for this study will culminate the answers to these questions all in one place and has the potential to yield results that could solidify Hollywood’s current strategies or spark a change for future filmmakers to consider more creative approaches.
For this research, the target population will be individuals of any race or gender on the older end of the Generation Z age spectrum, i.e. 18-27. This population represents the target audience for many films produced today and is the population that marketing teams usually play to. The participants would be involved in the research process by simply completing the brief survey. Participants’ identity will be kept confidential during the process of collecting the responses and survey will ensure a timely and organized collection of the data.
To begin the survey, questions will be asked that gauge how often participants watch movies, what types of movies they like best, and how interested they are in the industry overall. Getting answers from a wide variety of participants, i.e. those who watch movies infrequently, casual viewers, all the way to film buffs and pop culture junkies, will create a good basis for comparison within the sample. Demographic questions like age and gender will also be helpful in this area. Multiple choice questions to support RQ1 and 2 will be asked of the participants in order to determine what makes them feel marketed to in the current film landscape. Participants will be asked how aware they had been before taking this survey of the current market saturation of sequels, remakes, and adaptations.
Some stimuli will be provided, such as the fact that this past year (2024) all fifteen of the highest grossing films were sequels, remakes, or adaptations of some kind (IMDB, 2024). A select all that apply question will ask participants which of the ten, if any, they saw this year. Those films are: Inside Out 2, Deadpool and Wolverine, Despicable Me 4, Dune Part II, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Venom: The Last Dance, Bad Boys: Ride or Die, Kingdom of The Planet of the Apes, Moana 2, Twisters, Wicked, Alien: Romulus and It Ends With Us. Participants will be asked how they enjoyed the sequels, remakes, and adaptations they saw in comparison to the first of the series, or the original movie/material the project was based on. Participants will also be asked how and how often they are sharing their opinions of film with others.
For dissemination of the survey results a Google Site will be used. The site will include all of the elements from this research from start to finish, including the literature review, initial proposal, and all of the findings concluded from the survey. The target audience for the site and the findings from this survey will be current and aspiring professionals in the fields of film, communication, marketing, and digital media creation. Once completed, the site will be submitted, published, and shared with the members of Endicott College’s community currently in or studying to enter any of the industries mentioned above. Current or aspiring professions who view the results of the survey can use the information gathered to inform their decision making in future projects.
