Westwood Middle School opened in 1995 and is located in Danville, Virginia. The Westwood Tiger Band is under the direction of Demond McNair, who is currently in his 26th year at Westwood Middle School.
Mr. McNair holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from North Carolina A&T State University. Under his leadership, the Westwood Middle School band program has earned consistent Superior and Excellent ratings at the District 6 Band and Orchestra Assessments. He was honored as Teacher of the Year during the 2012–2013 school year.
Mr. McNair is a member of the National Music Educators Association, Virginia Music Educators Association, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the National Education Association. He resides in Greensboro, North Carolina.
The Westwood Middle School band program serves 88 students, with band instruction beginning in the 6th grade. Students perform in winter and spring concerts each school year and have opportunities to participate in All-District Band annually.
The Honor Band, composed of seventh- and eighth-grade students, has received Superior and Excellent ratings at Band and Orchestra Concert Assessments.
After completing middle school, many students continue their musical education with the George Washington High School Band, under the direction of Cody Kesling.
