How does moving from one place to another inform one’s perspective on the original place, the self, and the world?
As critical thinking involves gaining a critical distance from the subject being analyzed, people who have moved serve as exemplars in the sense that, once one moves from one place to another, he or she gains a critical distance from the original home as well as the new home. We will be reading and responding to chapters from four books on forced immigration: Aviva Chomsky’s “They Take Our Jobs” and 20 Other Myths About Immigration; chapters from two collections of narratives by undocumented immigrants in the United States, part of Voice of Witness’ series, Underground America: Narratives of Undocumented Lives, and Solito, Solita: Crossing Borders with Youth Refugees from Central America; and Jose Antonio Vargas’ Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen. We will be focusing on themes such as nation, home, identity, culture, democracy, human rights, history, exile, race, gender, wealth, and public space. The first three essays will be 5-6 pages of length, and the fourth paper is a longer narrative essay that combines the peronal testimonio, and oral history that we develop in Counselor Adriana Rivera's course, AAPS 103: Orientation to College Transfer.
This English C1000 + 1AS course is part of the Puente Project, a one-year pre-transfer program open to all students who meet the college’s eligibility criteria. The content of the course focuses on Latinx and multicultural issues and authors. Students are graded based upon meeting class requirements unique to the course content as taught by the instructor. Students enrolling in Puente who receive credit in the fall semester will continue into the respective Puente course in the spring semester. All students will be required to participate in all course and project activities, i.e., counseling and mentoring. All students are also required to enroll in the counselor guidance class, AAPS 103. For further information, please contact our Puente Counselor, Adriana Rivera.
