How does moving from one place to another inform one’s perspective on the original place, the self, and the world?
As critical thinking involves gaining a critical distance from the subject being analyzed, people who have moved serve as exemplars in the sense that, once one moves from one place to another, he or she gains a critical distance from the original home as well as the new home. We will be reading and responding to chapters from four books on forced immigration: Aviva Chomsky’s “They Take Our Jobs” and 20 Other Myths About Immigration; chapters from two collections of narratives by undocumented immigrants in the United States, part of Voice of Witness’ series, Underground America: Narratives of Undocumented Lives, and Solito, Solita: Crossing Borders with Youth Refugees from Central America; and Jose Antonio Vargas’ Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen. We will be focusing on themes such as nation, home, identity, culture, democracy, human rights, history, exile, race, gender, wealth, and public space.
