Spanish 1A, Spring 2020

Course Information

Spanish 1A is the very first course you take in your quest to learn Spanish. It is the first half of Spanish 1; it is only 3 units, and will cover chapters 1-3 of Exploraciones (Blitt and Casas, 2019; 3rd edition, Cengage). In this course, you will learn the first steps of Spanish: you will conjugate regular verbs in the present tense, and learn vocabulary based on the greetings, the university, the family, clothing, and weather.

This course does not have a pre-requisite, but it is also meant for people who either know zero Spanish or for those who may have taken some Spanish courses many years ago. We literally start with, "¡Hola! ¿Cómo estás?" It is not meant for anyone who comes from a Spanish-speaking family and is wanting to improve their 'academic' Spanish, or those who speak Spanish at home but are not comfortable with their literacy skills in Spanish. We offer a variety of courses that are better suited for those needs; please email the Professor for more information.

Class meetings

This is a hybrid course, and therefore has regular, weekly course meetings. We meet every Tuesday, 2:10-3pm, in HC 201 (Ocean Campus). Our first course meeting is on 28 January 2020; our last regular meeting is 12 May 2020. Our final exam will be on 19 May 2020, from 1-3pm (location TBA).

While this course does not have a specific 'midterm exam', you will have two chapter exams. They will be a part of our course meetings; the schedule will be released on the first day of class. Midterm grades will be based on your overall course progress at the time that midterm grades are due, which is 14 March 2020. You can, and should, monitor your grade on Canvas at all times.

Course Syllabus and Course Calendar

The course syllabus and course calendar are made available at our first course meeting, on 3 September 2019, at 1:10pm, in ARTX 202. They will also be made available on our Canvas site after the first course meeting. They can be made available via email request.
