HLTH 95 Transgender health: working with clients & communities

Course Information

COURSE OVERVIEW: This course is a critical analysis of the health status of transgender people. It focuses on the most urgent and prevalent public health issues impacting transgender and gender nonconforming communities, such as violence, barriers to education and employment, criminalization and medicalization, among others.

This class is designed to provide knowledge, skills, and resources necessary to work effectively in health and social service settings that serve transgender clients and communities. Therefore, it is perfect for providers, working professionals in all fields, and community members who want to learn how to change systems in order to make the world safer for transgender and gender nonconforming people; it is also excellent for those who want to become better allies to transgender and gender nonconforming colleagues, friends, family members, and clients!

about the community health worker (chw) & Sexual health educator (she) programs

HLTH 95 is an elective course for the Community Health Worker (CHW) and the Sexual Health Educator (SHE) programs.

The CHW Program trains students to work in the fields of public health, health care and social services. CHWs provide a wide range of services, including health outreach and education, client-centered counseling and case management, and client and community-based advocacy. They work to reduce unequal rates of illness and death between different communities and to promote health equity or justice, prioritizing communities with the greatest health risks.

The Sexual Health Educator Program trains students to identify markers of sexual health, in order to promote healthier and safer sexual relationships in client populations. SHEs work in community health and other settings, by supporting clients that benefit from violence prevention and intervention services, HIV/STI prevention services, and support negotiating safe and healthy relationships.
