COURSE OVERVIEW:
This course prepares frontline workers to provide navigation services to those at risk for, and living with, HIV, hepatitis, and/or common co-occurring conditions. This course is informed by a public health and social justice framework, to understand the broader context within which we will practice person-centered navigation services.
Some key topics include:
social determinants of health,
the ecological model,
effective public health strategies,
the basics of HIV and hepatitis C (prevention, testing, treatment, how these conditions operate in the body), and
key client-centered counseling concepts and skills (such as cultural humility, motivational interviewing, harm reduction, trauma-informed care, etc).
HLTH 67 is a great course for new and experienced social service providers and community health workers, for public health / HIV / hepatitis C / harm reduction community advocates, and for allies of those most affected by HIV and hepatitis C!
ADDING AND DROPPING: Please note that it is your responsibility to enroll at CCSF and to add or drop classes either online or in-person at designated registration offices. If you do not attend the first day of class, it is assumed that you are not enrolled in the course.
ABSENCE POLICY: As a hybrid course and given the importance of applied learning for this course, you can miss no more than 2 in-person classes due to unexcused absences. If you miss more than 2 in-person classes you may be dropped from the course and/or receive a grade of “F.” Similar to other professional training programs, the CHW program classes require students to be present in order to be certified or licensed.
HLTH 67 is a three (3) unit hybrid course with 8 in-person meetings. The hybrid format means that some weeks we will work fully online; and some weeks we will have an in-person class and work online for the rest of the week. However, it is not a self-paced course and students will be expected to meet deadlines on a regular basis.

HLTH 67 is an elective course for the Community Health Worker (CHW) and the Sexual Health Educator (SHE) programs.
The CHW Program trains students to work in the fields of public health, health care and social services. CHWs provide a wide range of services, including health outreach and education, client-centered counseling and case management, and client and community-based advocacy. They work to reduce unequal rates of illness and death between different communities and to promote health equity or justice, prioritizing communities with the greatest health risks.
The Sexual Health Educator Program trains students to identify markers of sexual health, in order to promote healthier and safer sexual relationships in client populations. SHEs work in community health and other settings, by supporting clients that benefit from violence prevention and intervention services, HIV/STI prevention services, and support negotiating safe and healthy relationships.
